Executive Chef Garlan L. McPherson
Garlan L. McPherson is the owner/head chef of Mrs. Kitchen Soul Food Restaurant and Bakery.
Mr. McPherson is a gifted chef who grew up watching his grandmother cook delicious meals for years. Watching her definitely inspired his love affair with good food. His skills were later cultivated through observing and learning from other outstanding cooks such as his father, Robert McPherson, his sister Cheryl Thompson, and his mother, the Late Virginia McFann.
He grew up in the Sutton Homes which were located in an area of San Antonio known as Denver Heights. So, it was important to him to open up a business inside of the community that shaped him into the man that he is today. He really wanted to give his friends and neighbors an eatery that they could be proud to have in their possession.
Before Garlan became an entrepreneur, he served as a Bexar County Probation Officer for 17 years. Garlan loved being a servant of the law, but cooking has always been in his blood. Thus, he had to pursue his dream of opening a restaurant.
He attended St. Philips College and Texas Lutheran University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and Criminology in 1989.
Garlan is husband to Alison D. McPherson. He is also the proud father of 6 children, Janay, Jasmyne, Alexandria, Christian, Trinity, and Israel.
